Ciné Sonica is a film concert series that pairs film screenings with live music performances. Curated and organized by composer and pianist Mihoko Suzuki, the series returns this fall in its fifth installment with The Passion of Joan of Arc.
Danish master Carl Theodor Dreyer’s 1928 silent historical drama will be accompanied by an ensemble of five musicians. Based on the record of Joan of Arc’s 1431 trial, the film is known for its emotionally charged blend of realism and expressionism—a combination of elements the ensemble will explore in its sonic layering of Medieval-Renaissance harmonics and acoustic intimacy. Dreyer’s emphasis on raw emotion—achieved through extreme close-ups, natural lighting, and the absence of makeup—portrays Joan as a charismatic, mystic warrior, an enduring icon of female strength and defiance. Her story continues to resonate as a powerful statement against systemic injustice and the subjugation of women’s voices.
