Scent Explorations: Hannah Marcus, Miriam Songster, Andreas Keller, & Kevin Shea
Fall into some olfactory art insanity this September 19th from 4-7pm at Bushel!
Hannah Marcus will be sharing an excerpt from a musical work-in-process involving a terpene diety, a 19th century Florentine chemist and a few BDS etrogs. Drummer Kevin Shea will be joining.
Andreas Keller will be at the helm of his Perpetual Perfume Stew. Bring your spare bottles of scent to contribute to the stew’s “slow convergence on the statistical mass of contemporary perfumery.”
Miriam Songster will deliver a “tidy talk about fascism” and make a recipe from Marinetti’s Futurist cookbook, specially updated for our times.
4-7pm. Relevant cocktails will be available. A beautiful scented time will be had by all.
This is an unticked event. Donations for the artists will be welcomed at the door.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Hannah Marie Marcus is a songwriter, musician and multi-media artist from New York City, who is lately making olfactory art. As a songwriter and musician she’s written recorded and performed in numerous projects, and has collaborated with diverse artists including Matana Roberts, Nina Katchadourian, Jessica Moss, members of Godspeed You!Black Emperor, Mark Kozelek, Rick Moody and many others. She is currently playing and recording with bassist Tim Dahl and drummer. Marcus has created olfactory performance pieces and installations in New York Los Angeles and the U.K. She’s conducted scent seances and is forming an alternate citron cult. She is currently working on an ongoing process piece informally titled Hallucinations of a BDS Etrog. and is slowly piecing together a scent- inflected musical inspired by speculative events in the lives of chemists Hugo Schiff and Klara Immerwahr. She also has a cajun band called Red Aces and an Ambient Noise duo called Wintersea Playboy. She likes to play with sound, smell and narrative.
Miriam Songster’s practice engages with several themes: minimalism, site-specificity, and the multi-faceted nature of sensory perception. Her practice has moved from sculpture and video to incorporate installation and scent-focused immersive works. Both natural and synthetic scents have been essential to her work in conjuring local atmospheres, calling up the past, and creating perceptual incongruencies that lead the audience to momentarily catch themselves in their own act of perception. Recently she has been thinking about how non-human animals experience the world and incorporating this into her practice.Miriam’s work has been funded by the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation and the NY Foundation for the Arts and shown in the US, Germany, Iceland, Russia and China. She received widespread press coverage, ranging from Hyperallergic to Forbes and the Japan Times, for “Ghostfood.”
Andreas Keller, the author of Philosophy of Olfactory Perception, owned and operated Olfactory Art Keller from 2021-2025. An aacademic with PhDs in Neuroscience and Philosophy, Keller is interested in the differences between seeing and smelling and supports artists using odors and perfumers creating art.
