The #SundayDrive
By Robert Brune
The morning air in the northern Catskills carried a chill as this week’s drive set out around the Pepacton Reservoir. It looked like spring, though it felt closer to fall, with temperatures holding in the mid forties.
Thin streams of mist lifted up the mountainsides, moving quietly and clinging to the green slopes.
Opening day for canoes and rowboats arrived on Friday, but gray clouds lingered after two days of light rain. Boats that had rested along the reservoir banks since Labor Day remained still through the Memorial Day weekend. By 9 am the drizzle eased, and the soaked forest released a steady drip from the trees above.
After a long weekend of activity, the quiet and stillness felt restorative. A stop at Tompkins Falls along Barkaboom Road felt fitting. The stream rushed toward the reservoir, and the sound of the waterfall settled everything, a gentle reminder to follow the current.
