The Route 28 Skeleton Crew Returns
by Robert Brune
PHOENICIA — After taking a break from his wildly creative roadside skeleton displays over the past year, Chris Huwer is once again bringing his unusual cast of characters to Route 28 in Phoenicia.
Huwer recently found renewed inspiration in the life and legacy of country music legend Dolly Parton, who died Aug. 25 at age 80. His latest display pays tribute to Parton with a musical scene featuring a guitar-playing Dolly skeleton surrounded by members of Huwer’s ever-growing skeleton crew.
“Back by popular demand, the Route 28 Skeleton Crew will be presenting the Pirates of the Catskills,” Huwer said, offering a preview of what motorists can expect as Halloween approaches.
For travelers along Route 28, Huwer’s returning skeletons offer another sign that fall has arrived in the Catskills, with an even larger Halloween production still to come.
